Sumario: The aim of this ethnographic research is to analyze how students' involvement in the handball teams of the medical course at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) mobilizes other leisure experiences. The research was carried out between 2022 and 2023, over a six-month immersion in the field of study. During this period, I followed 18 handball team training sessions, 4 parties, 4 university competitions and several hanging out in bars with the interlocutors of this study. The observations, therefore, resulted in dense descriptions of the context under investigation, recorded in a field diary. In the sports context of the medical students, the experience of leisure was not limited to handball training, but extended to other leisure experiences, such as parties and meetings in pubs. Training sessions were seen as opportunities for students to meet up and socialize, and to learn and experience handball as leisure. In this sense, parties, known as "Athletics Rocks"1, and hanging out at bars were identified as socialization rituals with the capacity to strengthen social ties and build a collective identity. University competitions, which mixed sport and partying, showed different levels of rivalry and interaction between students. In short, the analysis of the empirical data revealed that being part of handball teams serves as a "gateway" to various leisure practices, significantly influencing students' social relationships. Furthermore, the sporting and leisure activities promoted by the medical athletics team open up and close off the sporting context and the students' social relationships, revealing a complex social dynamic.
