Sumario: This dissertation aims to document and analyze the development of Artistic Gymnastics (AG) in Espírito Santo. The research focuses on understanding, through the memories of the pioneers of AG in the state, the facts that contextualize the development of the sport in the 20th and early 21st centuries, in order to value the agents who contributed to this development. Using a qualitative approach and the method of Oral History in its hybrid form, nine pioneers of Espírito Santo's AG were interviewed, delving into the narratives that shaped the trajectory of AG in the state, including: members of the federation's presidency, technical committees, coaches, university professors, parents, and former athletes. With the adoption of the French Method by the School of Physical Education of the Army in 1931, the School of Physical Education of Espírito Santo adhered to its guidelines, which shaped the teaching of gymnastics in the state in the following years. The interviews highlight the federalization of the state's School of Physical Education and reveal the importance of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) and professor Eulier Fávaro Machado as pioneers in the introduction and development of AG in the state as a crucial milestone, besides highlighting the fundamental role of the state in the participation in the foundation of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation in 1978. The constitution of the Gymnastics Federation of Espírito Santo in 1991 and the competitive successes of the 1990s are highlighted as high points in the history of the sport in the region. The study concludes that the 20th century was marked by significant challenges and changes for Brazilian AG and, particularly, for AG in Espírito Santo. The ability to adapt and the resilience of the gymnastics community in the face of structural, competitive, and management difficulties are emphasized. Through the narratives of the pioneers, the richness of the experiences lived, the dedication in organizing events, participation in competitions, contribution to the competitive development of AG in the state, and the methodological transition to the sport are evident. This work not only celebrates the achievements and dedication of the pioneers of Espírito Santo's AG but also sheds light on the history of the sport. The recognition that this study represents a specific snapshot opens the way for investigations that can offer a more comprehensive and detailed view of the development of the sport.
