Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program on physical activity in school. This intervention study was applied in two municipal elementar schools in the center region in Vitória, Espirito Santo State, Brazil. The sample consisted of 178 school children of both sexes, aged between seven and 12 years, from 3rd to 5th years of morning and evening shifts. After to raffle the schools to compose the control group (CG) and Intervention Group (IG) . The IG received a program of workshops during one scholar year with a focus on health yeating and physical activity. In all workshops incentive actions were taken to increase the level of physical activity. The CG was exposed to two speeches with the sames subjects. Tests were conducted within each group and between groups to evaluate whether they were comparable, the Students t test and Levenes test being used in addition to the Fisher exact and chi-square tests. The chi-square test was used to assess the difference between the factors related to perceived barriers to physical activity. The two-way ANOVA test was used to evaluate the effect of intervention on PA and screen time. The sample consisted of 113 (63.5%) of IG and 65 (36.5%) of the CG. Approximately 53% (n = 94) of the students were female, 32.5% (n=58) had 10 years and age men was 9.2±1 year. It was observed high screen time mean among students (310±177 minutes), with an mean higher for the boys (p<0.05) and, the results showed decreased in screen time in both groups after intervention program. Only IG group increased PA score after exposure to health education workshops, even after ajusted for socioeconomic status and sex (p <0.05). Our results showed effectiveness of group workshops methodology in increasing the physical activity of students in primary education in public schools Vitória / ES.
