Summary: Factors such as excessive workload and a sedentary lifestyle can cause or accentuate symptoms of depression and anxiety in professionals working in university hospitals. The primary objective of this study is to verify the prevalence of these symptoms in professionals. The secondary objective is to investigate the association between the level of physical activity and the prevalence of these symptoms according to the area of professional activity. Therefore, in this cross-sectional study, 199 participants answered a questionnaire to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety and level of physical activity. The results were analyzed in relation to the total number of participants and according to the three areas of professional activity (medical, care and administrative). The Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for comparisons according to area of work. Simple and multivariate regression analyses were used to verify the effects of the level of physical activity in relation to symptoms. A significance level of 5% was adopted. The prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety in the total number of participants was 44.2% and 54.2%, respectively. Levels of physical activity considered active and very active were associated with lower scores of symptoms of depression ( = -0.41, p = 0.001) and anxiety ( = -0.09, p = 0.017), respectively, compared to sedentary individuals. In conclusion, this study identified a high prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety among professionals. In addition, physically active medical and care professionals had fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety.
