Summary: When analyzing the history timeline, in search of slackline origins, we found that people´s fascination for the art of balance accompanied the men´s development, and acquired new meanings throughout historical periods. In the Contemporary Age, we observe that, in the mid-1980s, slackline emerged as a leisure practice in the microculture of North American climbers. In this period, nylon straps substituted chains and steel cables, being placed at different heights to create challenges to pass time between rest and climb. It is noticeable that, over the years, slackline has crossed the boundaries of climbers and gained popularity in general society. We highlight that, with the development of its practice, we noticed the emergence of competitions and different disciplines. But, despite the popularity and development of slackline, when we consulted the main databases (Scielo, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Science Direct), we found that there is a scarce academic production regarding this sport. Specially, in its competitive facet. This indicates the need for studies that consider athletes, as well as slackline sporting characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this study was to present and discuss the motivation to start and remain in practice of competitive slackline, more specifically, in trickline discipline. To obtain the data, we interviewed 14 male athletes through semi-structured interviews. The individuals were selected among the participants of 1st Open Slackline Qualify Tour held in the city of Vitória at Curva da Jurema beach, in Espírito Santo. The event was held in 2016, but remains the most important and significant event realized in this state, as it brought together athletes, amateurs and professionals, from Espírito Santo and from the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Data were collected in the second semester of 2017, and the study population had an age average of 23.57 years old and 4.86 years of practice time average. With regard to data analysis, we follow the prerogative of Content Analysis by Bardin (2011). The results were organized in two articles that pointed out the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation sources, both to start the practice and for the engagement in trickline training. We emphasize that it is essential to know and analyze these sources in order to involve new participants, and also to meet the athletes needs and concerns in order to favor a long-lasting engagement in this sport.
