Summary: This work presents the results of a research on a program to prevent the abuse of alcohol and other drugs based on social skills with the adolescent public. Social skills are different classes of behavior that the individual has to deal with interpersonal situations, including communication, making and maintaining friendship, empathy, assertiveness, expressing solidarity, handling conflicts and solving interpersonal problems, expressing affection and intimacy. The research aimed to identify alcohol and others drugs use rates and their relationship with social skills among adolescents in a school in the interior of the state of Espírito Santo, as well as to implement and evaluate a program to prevent the abuse of these substances from the Training of Social Skills. The specific objectives were: to characterize social skills; use assessment tools before and after interventions; follow-up assessment (three and six months after interventions); relate two assessment instruments; and analyze data among students. The methodology was constituted as an action research developed in a state school in the interior of the state of Espírito Santo with a class composed of 19 high school students. Two instruments were used for the production of data: the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the Social Skills Inventory for Adolescents (IHSA-Del-Prette). Through an interactive approach, the prevention program consisted of 12 sessions addressing the topic of drugs directly and indirectly and strengthening social skills. The instruments were reapplied at the end and at three and six months after the end of the interventions, using the focus group technique. Among the results related to drugs, there was a decrease in alcohol consumption, acquisition of innovative information, deconstruction of misconceptions about social norms based on scientific data. Regarding social skills, empathy and assertiveness were the skills most emphasized by the participants. Also noteworthy are the development of patience and the reduction of anxiety. Activities based on interactive meetings enabled better learning acquisition. It was observed that the social skills strategy makes it possible to achieve significant results regarding the prevention of drug abuse. It is believed that the results of prevention programs can be more expressive when there is less emphasis on substances and more focus on actions in which people are privileged.
