Summary: With the increase of the life expectancy the population aging arouses interest in ways to minimize the physiological declines related to the aging process. In this context, literature has been showing in recent decades the advantages of physically active aging as a way to make this process less impacting. However, some questions still need to be investigated. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the relationship between postural control and the level of muscle strength of the trunk in sedentary and physically active elderly individuals who engage in recreational or competitive physical activity. With specific objectives: To evaluate the muscular strength of the extensor and flexor muscles of the trunk; to evaluate static and dynamic postural control; to correlate trunk muscle strength and postural sway; to evaluate the level of physical activity, quality of life and history of falls. To do so, people aged 60 or over were invited to participate in the study. It is a cross-sectional study in which the following tests and questionnaires were used: Anamnesis and anthropometric evaluation; Evaluation of cognitive function with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Plantar sensitivity test by stoichiometry; Modified Baecke Questionnaire for Older Adults (MBQOA); Evaluation of postural sway by posturography; Evaluation of the muscle function of flexors and extensors of the trunk in isokinetic dynamometer in the variables of peak torque and power.
Keywords: Aging; Torque Peak; Isokinetic; Postural Sway; Physical Activity.
