Summary: The postactivation potentiation (PAP) has been used as a strategy of increased in the execution of neuromuscular exercises that require power and muscle power. Some studies have shown the demonstration of vertical jump performance improvement through the use of plyometrics and exercises several times this demonstration and the magnitude of the PAP are related to the level of physical fitness. However, no studies have associated physical capabilities and the interrelation of the same from the perspective of a "score" of general physical fitness with the magnitude of the occurrence of the PAP. OBJECTIVES: to investigate the effects of plyometric exercises and association sled towing in the PAP through counter moviment jump (CMJ) and the relationship of the individual response to the PAP with scores of specific physical and general skills. Materials and methods: participated in the study 24 male professional football players at aged 19 to 35 years. The athletes were subjected to physical tests of agility, muscle power, aerobic capacity and physical assessment of body composition. In the session for manifestation of potentiation were conditioning activities consisting of jumps and sprints with the sled towing. After the conditioning activity athletes performed 2 repetitions of CMJ on contact plataform with 1, 3 and 5 minutes of recovery. A análise de variância (ANOVA) of one waya de medidas repetidas foi utilizada para avaliar as diferenças no desempenho do CMJ. For an analysis of general physical fitness, we used the STEN Score and the Pearson correlation was used to relate the results of the PAP to the level of fitness. RESULTS: significant differences were found for the jump performance after 1, 3 and 5 minutes after the conditioning activity in relation to the baseline (3.58%; 5.10%; 5.40%, respectively). When players was divided in groups, of high and low physical fitness, conditioning activity promoted significant increase in height of the CMJ in both groups. The two-way ANOVA indicated main effect for the time factor (jump; p < 0.0001) and to the fitness factor (p = 0.039), plus a significant interaction (p = 0.023). The Bonferroni post-test indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) among groups with higher and lower physical fitness at all times after induction of PAP. CONCLUSION: The results allow to conclude that a plyometric exercise session associated with the sprints with the use of sled towing as conditioning activity results in increased performance of the CMJ in professional football players. In addition, it has been seen that the level of medical fitness of an athlete has direct influence on PAP's response, specially when correlated the physical capabilities of aerobic power and agility.
